Urban Waste By-law Enforcement Unit turning the tide on illegal dumping and littering

The 36 Urban Waste By-law Enforcement Unit officers who form the thin
blue line protecting our environment from illegal dumping had another good
month in February 2023.
During February 2023 a total of 149 fines were issued for littering and illegal dumping, with a total value of R287 000. In addition, the Urban Waste By-law Enforcement Unit issued 281 notices to appear in court.
Fines were issued during routine patrols, as well as special operations focussing on the following areas:
- Atlantis Industrial
- Brackenfell
- Delft
- Goodwood
- Heideveld
- Fisantekraal
'Officers are hard at work to deter illegal dumping in Cape Town and hold offenders accountable but we can do so much more if residents assist us by reporting any incidents of illegal dumping as they happen. Fines can only be issued if offenders are caught in the act.
'I ask residents to take photos of illegal dumping in progress so we make those responsible think twice before polluting our communities again,' said Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management.
The City has launched a 24-hour toll-free number (0800 110077) to report tip-offs about illegal dumping activity. Those convicted of illegal dumping could be fined up to R5 000, have their vehicle impounded, or face a two-year prison sentence.
In addition, for every report that leads to a fine and conviction, the City is offering a reward from R1 000 up to R5 000, depending on the offence.
